Bright as the Sunshine

Jun 13th, 2010 Posted in Anthropologie, Around Portland, ModCloth | 20 comments »

On Friday, I met the wonderful Kristin Cutie for lunch at an adorable bakery in Portland (Saint Honore Boulangerie). I wore the Vappu Dress, which I think is a modern day Snow White dress. I know some people have had problems with the Vappu Dress, but I found it to fit true to size, and very comfortable. I’m wearing it here with the Blooming Lattice Cardigan.

I continued the yellow theme on Sunday with our crepe brunch at Chez Machin, wearing the Anchors Aweigh Dress. This warm sunshine yellow is my favorite color, and I’m so happy to see that Anthropologie has come out with yellow dresses to feed my addiction.

The Anchors Aweigh Dress is on sale, but be wary as it doesn’t quite cover your whole chest, even though its a halter dress. That’s why I chose to put the On and Off Hours Blouse underneath it and wear it like a jumper. I feel like too much of the side of my chest would be showing, otherwise.

I want to share with you my latest, obsessive purchase. They are a woven version of All Black’s Scarf Tied Oxfords called Bow’n Places Heel. They’re available at Imelda’s for local gals. ModCloth also has them, but they’re currently sold out. You can sign up at ModCloth to be notified when they’ll be in stock, or you can try calling Imelda’s and see if they’ll ship them to you.

I hope everyone had a fun weekend. I’ll give you the weekly Mitch update. He got up at the crack of dawn and drug our friend Ben to hike at Mt. Hood. They had a fun hike, and tried to rescue a stranger’s  little Saab that was stuck in the snow.

Fun in the Somewhat Sun

Mitch’s brother is in town for a visit from Virginia, so we’ve been showing him a good time around Portland. I’ve been having too much fun to do much posting, sorry. But rest assured, I’ve been looking cute everyday!

Cat, blogger of anthrosdottir, has a great contest going on right now to help her figure out how to stay Anthro in a corporate world. I’ve made some suggestions there, and I wanted to add this outfit to the mix as a good Anthro work suggestion. It’s colorful, but still very covered up and conservative, so you could wear it on a casual Friday. It involves the Bee’s Favorite Blouse, which Cat featured on her blog recently.

I should have more posts over the weekend. We plan on turning this city inside out.

Today, we visited the coast, and we went onto the beach, which is the first time I’ve ever actually walked on sand on the beach in my life. It was a beautiful, breezy, slightly chilly day. I found lots of cool sand dollars and crab shells, and generally acted like a kid at the beach. We also hung out around one of the most recognizable landmarks on the Oregon coast: Haystack Rock.

Tremendous News!

May 23rd, 2010 Posted in Anthropologie, ModCloth, Urban Outfitters | 8 comments »

I know I’ve been AWOL this week, but I have a very excellent reason. This week, I received my acceptance letter to Portland State University, which means I will begin pursuit of my Master’s of Fine Arts degree in the Fall. This is and incredible dream come true for me. My experiences in Portland regarding my art have been very positive, and I’ve decided to pursue that as a full-time career.

Since I was so excited about my news this week, I forgot to take pictures of any outfits, even though I wanted to participate in Have a Cute Day’s Floral Week. The first outfit is my submission for Floral Week.  I absolutely adore the Anthropologie Botanical Stroll Dress, in all its crazy, cat-ladyness appeal.

The second outfit is what I wore to a party DJ’ed by Tudikas Wayne Hunnicutt, my friend Kristin’s boyfriend. The Catch of the Day Chemise is actually from Anthro’s lounge wear, but it’s way too cute to stay in the bedroom. It also is keeping perfectly in line with my obsession with animal prints lately.

I also got new glasses last week. They’re shown in the second outfit. What do you think?

Saddle Shoes by the Sea Side

Out of the blue, Mitch and I decided to make a run for the coast. It was incredible. We were surrounded by huge trees, in the middle of this huge mountain forest, and then all of a sudden, there’s the Pacific Ocean. It was colder than I expected, I really should have been wearing pants. The next time, I’ll be prepared.

I can’t believe how beautiful Oregon is, all over. If anyone is thinking about moving here or visiting here, I highly recommend it. It’s amazing.

This is another ModCloth dress. They continue to impress me. Their dresses are so simple, so quirky, and really affordable.

Wild Horses Couldn’t Drag Me Away

May 14th, 2010 Posted in ModCloth | 10 comments »

Lately, it seems like I’ve been buying a lot of clothing with animal prints on them. Not zebra stripes, or cheetah spots, but actually animal prints shaped like bunnies, horses, doves, etc.

I found this dress on ModCloth’s website, and absolutely flipped. A gorgeous floaty dress covered in horses? Yes, please! The length comes down to my knee, but I decided to wear a frilly slip underneath it, to add some extra ruffle at the bottom.

I’m not as interested in Anthropologie’s recent pieces, as they’re showing a lot of tropical, vacation type prints. This usually happens each summer. They always manage to grab my attention back around July when they start pushing out Fall items. In the meantime, I’ll be buying cute, floaty dresses from ModCloth.

I hope everyone’s having a great Friday!

Touch of Grey

May 13th, 2010 Posted in ModCloth, Urban Outfitters | 3 comments »

Since I got this cardigan, I haven’t been able to stop myself from wearing it with everything I have. Something about it just screams, “Wear me every single day!” I decided to pair it with a simple outfit today of just shades of grey and black.

The dress is another great find from ModCloth. It’s a nice jersey cotton, so it’s going to be comfortable all summer long.

Lastly, I topped it off with my obsession of obsessions, my Urban Outfitters saddle shoes. I’m so in love with these shoes that I think I may have to buy another pair, because I don’t think I could live without them. And that’s really saying something, because I am totally a Mary Janes girl.

I hope your week is going well.

Swirling Particles

May 11th, 2010 Posted in Anthropologie, ModCloth | 5 comments »

I decided to go totally neutral today, and keep everything blue, creme, and black. The Anthropologie Swirling Particles Skirt has an extreme bubble hem, which make sit very bouncy, but I think it’s very cute. I’m completely in love with this ModCloth Fabray Cardigan, and have been wearing it everyday since I got it. The thumb holes and the ruffles are just too cute.

The saddle shoes are also a favorite of mine. I got them at Urban Outfitters, and I think I’m going to have to get a backup pair. Do you have any clothes that you have to get backups of?

When Doves Fly

May 10th, 2010 Posted in ModCloth | 6 comments »

I’ve been stalking this dress for a couple of weeks, and luckily snagged this dress when it came back in my size for a second on the website. It’s sold out again, but I highly recommend it to anyone if they can catch it in their size.

The cardigan is also from ModCloth, and has thumb holes, which I haven’t seen since I was in high school. Did anyone else used to stretch out their sleeves and cut holes in them?

Together, the dress and cardigan are like the perfect, polished grunge look. So cute.

Bunnies with Backpacks

May 8th, 2010 Posted in ModCloth | 4 comments »

Here’s another awesome piece from ModCloth. I’m not sure if you can tell, because the print is really small, but the print is tiny bunnies with little purple backpacks. It’s suprisingly short, so I chose to put a long slip underneath to remain modest.

I’m really impressed with the clothing I’ve been getting from ModCloth lately. It’s more than reasonably priced, and pairs well with the Anthropologie items I have. Together, they make the perfect whimsical, girlie outfit with just a touch of vintage flare.

I’m not wearing any shoes in the picture because I’ve been having a mono relapse this week and been very sleepy, so this picture was captured on my way back to bed.

Clothing Wonder Years

May 3rd, 2010 Posted in ModCloth | 18 comments »

When I was growing up, I lived in a really small town. Small as in, it was a one hour drive to get to a mall with a JC Penny’s. As in no movie theater. Just a Roses and then later, a Wal-Mart. This was OK when I was young and didn’t care about clothes, but became a problem around the time I entered high school. Luckily, a mail order catalog was on its way to save my fashion life.

Delia’s catalog started in 1993. I started getting it almost immediately, because I had a subscription to Seventeen magazine. I remember getting the first one in the mail. I was FLOORED. Vintage prints. Skirts with sneakers. Alternative-looking models. No jeans, just dresses, skirts, and corduroys. I wanted everything in the catalog. Each month, I waited for the next issue. I carried them around with me like they were actual magazines. I drew stars and hearts around the items I wanted. My friends also became obsessed with Delia’s. It was all we talked about at lunch.

Unfortunately, my parents did not think Delia’s was worth it (and we weren’t the richest people, not by a long shot). So I bought my clothes from thrift stores and tried to make due with Deb (did anyone else have this store?). But as soon as I started working, I started buying from Delia’s. My entire paycheck would go to buy things from Delia’s. I thought I was so stylish.

When I graduated high school, I took a road trip to the nearest Delia’s, which was outside of Washington, DC. That was about 6 hours away from me. It was totally worth it. I knew that I would shop at Delia’s for the rest of my life.

Then something bad happened. Alloy bought out Delia’s and completely changed it from a cute, indie-label clothing to a generic jeans and graphic tee shop. I was crushed. Where would I shop? Where could I find cute dresses for $38 in my little town? Nowhere.

Eventually I gave in and shopped at Gap and American Eagle, since they were the only stores within one hour driving distance. I still wore my old Delia’s and thrift shop stuff, but I took it as a sign that I should grow up and dress like one.

Eventually I found Urban Outfitters and then Anthro, and my love for quirky clothing was restored. But I still held a special place in my heart for Delia’s.

I’ve known about ModCloth for about two years or so, but had not ordered anything from there until two weeks ago. I was a little worried about the fit (big chests did not seem to fit with their clothes), but I decided to try it. Now I have finally found my alternative to Delia’s. ModCloth is inexpensive, quirky and just different from what else is out there.

I still have a few of my Delia’s pieces of clothing and some jewelry, but I am looking forward to introducing ModCloth to my other love: Anthro. I think it will be a long-lasting relationship.
