Over It Over Again

Jan 24th, 2011 Posted in Anthropologie, Orate | 12 comments »

OK. So this last week has been … really strange. Not in any particular way; just strange things have happened. Nothing bad, just weird. It kinda sucked the life out of me.

School is already off and running at full speed, so I’m very involved in all my homework, but that’s normal. My part time job has been a little stressful since Christmas, so I think that the holidays kinda brought me down. Which is strange because I’m a very sunny person. I’ve just felt very quiet lately. But I’ve really missed my blog and reading new comments, so I’m giving myself a little kick in the rear to get going again.

This time of year always puts me in a rut. The clothing is slowly transitioning to spring, so nothing is very eye-catching. I’m not really into tribal/global prints, so there’s not a lot of eye candy right now. I think it just looks silly on me, because I am not exotic in any way and it just looks like I’m trying too hard. But those girls who can pull it off are amazing.

I’ve been taking a look at my life and trying to streamline and reduce. This means chucking everything in the closet that is too worn, too big/small, never worn or not my style. This is actually perking me up quite a bit. I feel very uncluttered. I’ve also been streamlining my makeup/skincare routine. I love makeup, but sometimes i don’t wear any, so there’s no need for tons of unused stuff. I almost took this too far and almost cut off my hair (I’ve been growing it out for years since a very bad pixie cut).

Please don’t read this and think I’m really sad; I’m just in a little slump and it felt good to write it out. Thanks for reading my rant :) As a thank you, here are a couple of cheery outfits.

Have a great day!

Epic Battle Between Gracie and Peanut

Nov 12th, 2010 Posted in Orate | 6 comments »

Warning: Completely Off-Topic Post Ahead

Gracie is the beast. Peanut is the lovable cat. Here’s yet another “look at my cute little pets!” YouTube video. I thought the Internet needed a new one. This is what happens every day in our apartment. It’s followed by nap time.

My blog now has a cute pets video. Is that some sort of milestone?

Experiencing Technical Difficulties, but Almost Back!

Sep 4th, 2010 Posted in Orate, Yard Sale | 3 comments »

Some craziness happened at my home base this week, and I was without TV, Internet, computers–everything, all week. It’s all coming back online now. My website is accessible for some people, and should be generally working for everyone over the next few days. Since I was without email, I wasn’t able to respond to questions about the blog sale, and I’m very sorry for the delay. I’m getting all caught up today, shipping things to folks who have paid, and getting invoices to those who have sent me their shipping information. I’ll have more items up for sale in the next day or so. Thank you so much for sticking with me during this difficult time!

Now, I’m going to go take a nap because the stress is freaking me out. Here’s some photos of various pets of mine over the years that illustrate how I feel.

Silent All These Years

Aug 4th, 2010 Posted in Anthropologie, Orate | 8 comments »

The beautiful Sara at You, Me and Anthropologie, tagged me in a post and asked me to answer eight questions. I love quizzes/questionnaires, so I couldn’t wait to answer. Here goes!

1. If you could have one super power, what would it be and how would you use it?

This is really nerdy, but I love the show Charmed, and I would love to have Piper or Prue’s powers (freezing time, moving objects, etc.) That’s not really a super power, but I really love Charmed, so there’s my shout-out.

2. If you could be on one reality TV show, what would it be and why?

Project Runway, even though I can’t sew. I would love to make clothes and pick out the model’s hair and makeup. I need to learn how to sew… if I have any spare time!!

3. If you could re-name yourself, what name would you choose (first name)?

I’ve always liked the name Abby. I tried to change my name to Allie, but it didn’t take.

4. Would you rather shave off your eyebrows or have your eyelashes fall out?

Definitely shave the eyebrows. You can pencil those in (and mine are already thin), but I LOVE thick lashes. It’s the one makeup item I have to wear all the time.

5. Would you rather give up your cell phone or shopping at your favorite store for a year?

I could never give up Anthro, but I could live without the phone. I feel old saying this, but I don’t understand the constant texting craze. Just call me or come over. If I gave up Anthro, they would come out with the most perfect pieces and I would be forever kicking myself over it.

6. If you could go back in time and re-live one day in your life, what day would you choose?

This was the hardest question. I honestly couldn’t think of one, but since I have to pick I will say it would be the day that I saw Bird and the Bee in DC. After the show, I was able to meet Inara Gerge and have her sign a cd. I was so nervous that I couldn’t get a coherent sentence out. I think I mumbled something about how cool she is and then took a really awful picture with her. If I could do it over, I would come off as intelligent and cool, and bring a real camera, not just my iPhone.

7. Favorite fast food place?

I love Burgerville in Oregon, only because they have a great bean burger (I’m a vegetarian) and awesome fresh fruit milkshakes.

8. What is your favorite Ben and Jerry’s ice cream flavor?

Hrrmm… they discontinued my absolute favorite flavor: Nutty Waffle Cone. Rats! But I really like Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream (it’s very similar). In the shop I love Lemonade and Berry Berry Extraordinary sorbets. I love fruity treats. I rarely eat chocolate (which makes me a strange bird indeed), but I could freak out over a fruity cake or pastry.

That was really fun :) Now you know some obscure things about me. I’m supposed to tag other bloggers, but Sara tagged a lot of my top choices. So I will tag you, my readers. You can answer one of the following (or all) questions if you want to play. I can’t wait to read the responses!!

1. What’s your must-have makeup/skincare item?

2. What’s your favorite new arrival at Anthro for August?

3. What’s your favorite guilty pleasure TV show?

4. Are you a cat or dog person?

5. Who’s your favorite band?

I will post my answers later this week. You can also ask me a question, if you want.

Ok, here are some more birthday outfits. Hooray for birthdays!!

Earlier this week, I debuted another birthday buy: the Bianka Blouse. I paired it with my orange Thousand Days skirt and left the tie undone. I am in love with the August new arrivals. I knew I was going to want everything in July and August, and I did. I love the Victorian touches, ruffles, sweaters, tweeds, etc. I love Fall. I miss my layers, tights, hats, everything. I am very thankful to be in Portland this year, as the heat is off the charts back on the East coast.

In this outfit:

Next up is the Chilled Ripples Shell. This is a stunner. The back details beg for an up-do. The fit is nice and loose, even when I sized down. I bought the Daisy Quarters skirt last year, but never knew what to wear with it. The shell is pure perfection with it.

In this outfit:

I thought I had stereo…

…but it turns out I have mono. WTF? Apparently it wasn’t enough to be stricken with blood clots and the flu in the past year, but now I’ve caught mono as well. I think I can safely say I’ve had my share of diseases for a while.

Obviously, there’s no new outfits to post since I’m laying around in pajamas all the time, but I am dreaming of new outfit combinations. Hopefully, I’ll get back on the posting wagon soon.

Luckily, I have an understanding boss and a partner in crime who takes care of me.

Things that get me through a tough week

Apr 5th, 2010 Posted in Orate | 8 comments »

1. Lip Smackers – Only $1.50, and so many flavors. Plus not tested on animals. Whenever I skip lipstick, this is my go-to.

2. The Fur-Babies – They are always getting into trouble, but I love how they gather around me when I’m sick and watch over me. They’re the two best babies a mom could ask for :)

3. The Partner-in-Crime – Mitch indulges my silly requests for things like gelato in the winter, and my never-ending appetite for something cheesy. Whenever I’m down, I can count on him to cheer me up.

4. PJs – I live in a tee and pajama pants at home. The first thing I do when I come home from work is put on an old concert tee and my pj pants. If you come over to my apartment, you will see me in my pjs. If I don’t leave the house on a particular day, I will not get out of them. This is something that I have engrained into Mitch. Now he has to wear his, too. Nothing says comfy like pjs, blankets, couch, and partner-in-crime.

5. Music – I like lots of different kinds of music, but right now I’m listening to:

She & Him – Volume 2
Tori Amos – American Doll Posse
REM – Automatic for the People
The Shins – Chutes too Narrow
The Bird and the Bee (anything of theirs)
Camera Obscura – My Maudlin Career

That’s a random mix of new and old :)

Happy 101 Blogger Award

Feb 28th, 2010 Posted in Orate | 8 comments »

First, let me say that I am extremely flattered to be nominated by both Maria and Tien–two wonderful gals whom I stalk daily through their blogs–for the Happy Blogger award. I love that we have this growing community, where we’re all supportive of each other.

I’m supposed to list ten things that make me happy, and then nominate ten others. I’m generally a very happy person, so picking ten things is very challenging. Here they are, in no particular order:

Anthropologie — Obviously, I love Anthropologie, but let me tell you a few reasons why. I love Anthropologie because they have such unique pieces. It’s like going to the best thrift store ever, but all the clothes are new, and they don’t have that funky thrift store smell. You can pretty much do all your shopping there–from clothing, to shoes, to underwear, to household items. I’m not saying that I’ve never had a bad experience with Anthro–I have, and I’m sure that everyone has. Generally, however, I leave the store happy, and happy with my purchases.

Art — I’ve always loved making art, whether it’s realistic or abstract, paint or pencil, sculpture or screen printing. I just love being able to express myself creatively. I’ve always regretted not studying art more in school, but with the DIY movement and the success of Etsy, I’ve been able to find a creative outlet for sharing my art. I try to make my art as accessible as possible by drawing whimsical, vintage-looking girls. I feel like I’m providing both decoration and whimsy to whoever purchases my art.

My Fur Babies — I’m the proud parent of two fur babies: a miniature dachshund and jack russell mix named Gracie, and a calico cat that thinks she’s a dog named Peanut. I treat both of these little ones like my babies, including tucking them in at night, and spending as much time with them during the day as possible. I’m a vegetarian and I love animals, so I’m very particular about makeup and products I use around the home to ensure they’re not tested on animals.

Music — I enjoy a pretty eclectic range of music, but my favorite band of all time is, and always has been, a tie between the Beatles and REM. I’m a big indie music fan, and love music from Jenny Lewis, the Decemberists, the Shins, Camera Obscura, and others. I’m also a huge Tori Amos fan, which I think makes me a little goth :-) . Music is an important part of my day–I always have music on while I work, plenty of CDs in my car, and my iPod is always loaded. When I lived in DC, I went to a lot of shows, and hope to continue to do so in Portland.

Mary Janes — I’ve always had a weakness for Mary Jane shoes, whether they’re flat, heeled, t-strapped, or whatever, I want them. Ninety-percent of my shoes are Mary Janes. I love the vintage, little girl look, especially when paired with a sexier, high-heeled style. In my mind, they are the absolute perfect pair of shoes, and Anthropologie is always making irresistible Mary Janes. When I’m not wearing heels, I’m wearing Chuck Taylors–so it’s either Chucks or Mary Janes. They are my wardrobe basics.

Makeup — Even though I don’t wear a ton of makeup, and I don’t always wear makeup when I’m going out, I have a strange addiction to makeup. For me, it’s literally paint for my face, and I love to create different looks with it. Lately, I’ve been experimenting more with red lipstick, for a vintage vibe. My top two favorite reds are Laura Mercier lipstick in Mistress, and MAC lipstick in Lady Bug. I also love neutral-colored lipsticks–my two favorites in this category are Urban Decay’s Sell-Out and MAC’s Shy Girl. I love trying out new makeup and could spend hours in Sephora or a makeup counter, but I stay away from drug store brands as they are usually tested on animals.

Portland — I’ve only been here for a few months, but Portland is by far the most awesome place I’ve ever lived. The people here are really nice, the weather is really mild (great for my migraines), and they still have all the stores that I like to shop in. Plus, I’m just hours away from San Francisco, which I also love. Since I’ve been in Portland, I’ve been able to get outside and hike more, and I’m really enjoying nature, whereas in DC I felt cooped-up in my apartment all the time.

My Friends — Since high school, I’ve really kept my close friends to a minimum. I still have friends from high school I keep in touch with and friends from work, but some of the nicest I’ve met have been from my blog.

My Bed — I love to sleep in, so my bed is ridiculously comfortable. I pile on all the extra pillows I can, I wrap myself in my Anthro quilt, and I could stay in bed for days if nothing was going on in the real world. I also have a wonderful stuffed buffalo that Mitch bought me, which I think is such a weird stuffed animal that it has to be on my bed at all times. His name is Randy.

My Partner in Crime — Mitch is the person who understands me the most and has encouraged me the most. He’s my very best friend, someone who knows what I’m thinking before I even say it. We don’t even have to communicate with each other sometimes, just being around each other is enough. Except for work, we really haven’t been apart for the entire eight years of our relationship. I can’t imagine spending my life with a better partner in crime.

There’s so many other things that I love–Essie nail polish, Wes Andersen movies, reading, silly television shows, etc.–but I think ten will do for now. Even though I’m going to cheat a little bit (I’m going to name some bloggers that have already been nominated), here are my nominations for ten bloggers I’d like to know more about, in no particular order:

1. Kim at Anthroholic
2. Anjali at Golden Means
3. Kjrsten and Anna at {have a cute day}
4. Amy at Kelinda. Kelinda
5. Tien at adiaphane
6. Alexis at JCA
7. Roxy at Effortless Anthropologie
8. Maria at Infinite Whimsy
9. Dea at The Dea Dairies
10. Taryn at Anthro Happy

Anthro Community

Jan 12th, 2010 Posted in Orate | one comment »
I just wanted to take a minute to recognize the awesome community of Anthro-lovers here. 2009 was a rough year for me. I was sick with really bad migraines most of the year, I got the flu, and was hospitalized after I moved to Portland. What made it bearable was a great partner-in-crime (Mitch), a great job, a renwed passion for art, and the wonderful people I have met through the Anthro community. When I was sick, I received many well-wishes and positive thoughts. It felt so great to have strangers care enough to send emails to me. So I just wanted to say thanks. I love every email and every comment that I receive.

When I decided to start this blog, I sought advice from Natalie and Roxy, and both were so supportive and had a lot of great ideas for me. I really appreciated the support , as well as reading their wonderful blogs everyday, and I just want to say “Thanks” to both.

This year, I’ve been really sick, and I’ve run into some roadblocks in getting my artwork posted regularly. But, Portland is treating me really well, and I’m looking forward to spending more time on my art and blog.

I wish everyone the best in 2010!
